In my more than 30 years of international naval expertise, I have inspected more than 1,500 yachts in 40 countries. I’ve seen how Family Offices and investors lose millions of euros for not identifying critical defects during the inspection.
This checklist is the result of decades of experience. It’s the 50 points you should never miss when inspecting a yacht, organized in 7 critical categories.

How to Use This Checklist
This checklist is designed to be used during the physical inspection of the yacht. I recommend:
- Print the final version (pages 10-12) to take her on board
- Mark each point as inspected
- Take pictures of any anomaly
- Document everything in the note section
- Hire a certified expert for a professional inspection

Property and Registration Title
Verify that the title of ownership is free of charge, mortgages or embargoes. Check that the owner’s name matches the official record.

Certificate of Classification
Review the certificate of the classified company (Lloyd’s, DNV, ABS, RINA). Verify that it is in force and without outstanding conditions.

Maintenance History
Request the full maintenance book. Verify that services have been carried out according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

History of Sinisters
Investigate whether the yacht has suffered accidents, fires, floods or floods. Request repair reports made.

Statutory Certificates
Check certificates SOLAS, MARPOL, IAPP, IOPP, etc. Check that they are in force and comply with international standards.

Plans and Specifications
Request original plans of the shipyard (as-built). Verify that there are no unauthorized modifications to the plans.

Real Motor Hours
Verify the operating hours of main engines and generators. Compare to maintenance history.

Insurance and policies
Review the current insurance policies (casco, machines, P blind). Verify coverages, exclusions and history of sinisters.
Council of the Expert
If the seller cannot provide all the requested documentation, it is a warning sign. A well maintained yacht has complete and organized documentation.

Visual inspection of the Helmet
Examine the helmet in search of
cracksdeformations, deformations or visible repairs. Pay special attention to the floating line.

Measurement of Swords
Execute weight thickness measurements with ultrasounds. Compare with the original thickness of the shipyard.

Inspection of Soldiers
In steel/aluminum yachts, inspect welds with penetrating dyes or magnetic particles. Find microfissures.

System of Catholic Protection
Verify the state of the anodes of sacrifice or the ICCP system. Check that they work properly.

Quilla and Orzas
Inspect the nozzle for damage, corrosion or repairs. Verify the tracking system (if applicable).

Timon and Government System
Check the status of the rudder, shovels, hinges and government system. Verify soots and excessive play.
15
Helices and Axes
Inspect propellers for cavitation, damage or repair. Verify the state of the axes and their seals.

Handrails and Barandillas
Check the solidity of handrails, rails and clamping points. Verify that they comply with security regulations.

Hails and Tapas
Verify the sealing of hatlets, log covers and accesses to the helmet. Check together and close.

Painting and Antifouling
Evaluate the state of the painting system. Verify the antifouling and the interval from the last application.
◾ Critical Point
The inspection of the helmet must be carried out with the yacht outside the water (in varadero). A surface inspection from the water is NOT sufficient to detect structural defects.

Main Engines – Visual Inspection
Examine engines for oil, fuel or coolant leaks. Verify the general state and cleaning.

Motor Oil Analysis
Take oil samples for laboratory analysis. Detect wear metals, fuel pollution or water.

Refrigeration system
Inspect heat exchangers, water pumps, thermostats and hoses. Verify absence of corrosion.

Escape System
Examine collectors, turbocompressors, silencers and exhaust pipes. Find signs of corrosion or leakage.

Fuel System
Inspect tanks, pumps, filters and pipes. Verify absence of contaminants and water in fuel.

Generators
Try generators under load. Verify voltage, frequency, temperature and oil pressure.

Hydraulic system
Inspect hydraulic pumps, cylinders, hoses and connections. Verify absence of leakage and correct pressure.

Air Conditioning System
Probar sistemas de climatización en todas las zonas. Verificar compresores, evaporadores y condensadores.

La reparación o sustitución de un motor principal puede costar entre €200,000 y €2,000,000 dependiendo del tamaño del yate. Un análisis de aceite de €300 puede detectar problemas antes de que sean catastróficos.

Cuadros Eléctricos Principales
Inspeccionar cuadros eléctricos con termografía infrarroja. Detectar puntos calientes, conexiones flojas o sobrecargas.

Baterías
Verificar estado, antigüedad y capacidad de las baterías. Comprobar conexiones y sistema de ventilación.

Cableado y Conexiones
Inspeccionar cableado en busca de deterioro, conexiones sueltas o cables expuestos. Verificar aislamiento.

Sistema de Tierra
Medir resistencia del sistema de puesta a tierra. Verificar que cumpla con normativas de seguridad.

Protecciones y Disyuntores
Comprobar que todos los circuitos tengan protecciones adecuadas. Verificar calibración de disyuntores.

Probar todas las luces (interiores, exteriores, navegación). Verificar funcionamiento de interruptores y dimmers.

Sistema de Energía de Respaldo
Probar sistema de transferencia automática entre generador y red. Verificar UPS y sistemas de emergencia.
⚡ Riesgo de Incendio
El 35% de los incendios en yates tienen origen eléctrico. Una inspección termográfica puede detectar puntos calientes antes de que provoquen un incendio. Coste de la inspección: €500-€1,500. Coste de un incendio: €500,000 – €50,000,000.

Sistema de Navegación Electrónica
Probar radar, GPS, plotter, ecosonda, AIS y sistemas de navegación. Verificar calibración y funcionamiento.

Probar VHF, SSB, satélite (Inmarsat, Iridium) y sistemas GMDSS. Verificar DSC y EPIRB.

Equipos de Seguridad
Verificar balsas salvavidas, chalecos, aros salvavidas, bengalas y equipos de seguridad. Comprobar fechas de caducidad.

Inspeccionar extintores, sistema fijo de extinción (CO2, agua nebulizada), detectores de humo y alarmas.

Probar sistema de gobierno de emergencia (timón de reserva). Verificar funcionamiento y accesibilidad.

Probar bombas de achique de emergencia. Verificar caudal y autonomía. Comprobar accionamiento manual.

Señales Lumínicas y Acústicas
Probar luces de navegación, luces de señalización y silbato. Verificar que cumplan con COLREG.
🛟 Seguridad Primero
Los equipos de seguridad caducan. Una balsa salvavidas caducada no solo es ilegal, sino que puede costarte la vida. Verifica todas las fechas de caducidad antes de la compra.

Inspeccionar mamparos, muebles fijos y estructura interior en busca de movimientos, grietas o reparaciones.

Acabados y Carpintería
Evaluar calidad de acabados, carpintería, tapicerías y pinturas. Verificar estado general y mantenimiento.

Sistemas de Entretenimiento
Probar sistemas de audio, video, TV, satélite y WiFi. Verificar funcionamiento en todas las zonas.

Cocinas y Áreas de Servicio
Inspeccionar electrodomésticos, encimeras, fregaderos y sistemas de refrigeración. Verificar funcionamiento.

Baños y Sistemas Sanitarios
Probar inodoros, duchas, lavabos y sistemas de tratamiento de aguas negras. Verificar ausencia de fugas y olores.
✨ Lujo con Sustancia
Los acabados de lujo pueden ocultar defectos estructurales. No te dejes impresionar por la estética. Un yate puede parecer perfecto por dentro pero tener problemas graves en el casco o los sistemas.

Prueba de Velocidad y Consumo
Realizar pruebas a diferentes regímenes de RPM. Medir velocidad máxima, velocidad de crucero y consumo de combustible.

Prueba de Maniobrabilidad
Probar giros, parada de emergencia, marcha atrás y maniobras en puerto. Evaluar respuesta del sistema de gobierno.
50
Prueba de Sistemas Bajo Carga
Probar todos los sistemas simultáneamente bajo carga máxima. Verificar temperaturas, presiones y voltajes.
🌊 La Prueba Definitiva
Las pruebas de mar son OBLIGATORIAS. Muchos defectos solo se manifiestan cuando el yate está en movimiento: vibraciones, ruidos, sobrecalentamientos, fugas. Nunca compres un yate sin pruebas de mar completas.
