Marine Engine Analysis: Real Hours vs. Declared Hours

The engine is the heart of the yacht and the most expensive component to repair. Learn the forensic techniques we use to verify the actual use of propulsion and avoid costly fraud.

1. Why the Hour Counters are not Fiable

The number one error of the buyers is to look at the (hour meter) the control box and assume that that is the actual use of the engine. In the second hand nautical, hour counters are often manipulatedeither digitally (reprogramming ECU) or mechanically (disconnection of the sensor). In addition, on boats with multiple frames or refurbished electrical systems, the counter may have been rebooted to zero accidentally or intentionally.

A well-maintained diesel marine engine can last between 5,000 and 10,000 hours before requiring further reconstruction (overhaul). If you are sold a 10-year yacht with only 200 hours, the alarms must jump immediately. A yacht of that size, with normal weekend use and summer cruises, should be between 800 and 1,500 hours.

2. Oil Analysis (Wear Metal Analysis): The Definitive Test

If the fortress is the “official version”, the oil analysis is the “DNA test” of the engine. It consists of extracting a sample of crank oil (and of transmissions/investors) and sending it to a certified laboratory (such as CAT SOS, Cummins or independent laboratories such as Polaris).

The laboratory performs a spectrometric analysis that detects parts per million (PPM) of suspended metals. This tells us exactly what internal pieces are worn out:

Some astute sellers change the oil and filters just before the inspection to “wash” the evidence of wear. If the oil is too clean and smells new in an engine with supposed 1,000 hours, require the engine to run at least 50 hours before taking the sample, or check the oil filters by cutting them to inspect the metallic wastes trapped in the paper.

5. The Importance of Maintenance History

The best indicator of the health of an engine is not its current aspect, but its history. An engine with 2,000 hours and a history of oil changes every 100 hours, annual alignments and exchangers cleaning is infinitely more valuable than a 400-hour engine that has never seen a workshop.

Demand to see Maintenance Book (Logbook) and the original invoices. If the seller says “I did it myself” or “I took it to a trusted mechanic who is no longer there,” assumes that maintenance is an unknown and presupposes a further review (Major Service) immediately after purchase.
